GNARLFEST STILL OCTOBER 1ST AND 2ND

So despite some notable players being missing,( i.e. Rudy Rampage, Boss Hogg, Charlie Center, to name a few), this years Feather Fest was absolutely amazing. Congrats to Taylor Robertson who bested me by six seconds to take the gold in the long boat and everyone else who raced. Taylors band rocked the set that night and the rest is a blur of amazing memories with good friends and amazing breakfasts....mmm....Anyhoo during all the hubbub the date of Gnarlfest came into question. Dam maintenance…See More

Gnarlfest 2011

A Note to All Kayaking and/or Lifestyling Enthusiasts,First off a big shout out to Keith Kishiyama et al for putting on another amazing creek race. This year was good with giddens again taking the Kirk shirt followed a couple minutes later by a tight clustering of racers with Taylor Robertson edging ahead of Macy Burnham by one second for second place. Robby Hogg stomped the short boats with a time under 40 minutes closely followed by Dave Maurier. The rest of the results are a bit hazy…See More

Anybody hiked into Flintstone from the Gorge overlook?

Rebecca and the baby were considering hiking in and meeting us at camp, but I have no idea how the hike down to the river would be with an 8 week old and associated gear.  If anyone has any insight, please let me know. Don't worry, we would camp far enough away so nobody would need to worry about baby noises.  Plus we would try to minimize the number of diapers we leave behind...See More

Applegate waterfall rescue

We had a little rescue on the river today, go to www.roguekayakers.com for the write up. This was the scariest day on the river for me by far. I didn't make the best decisions, thank god it turned out good.

The Box Canyon

4 southern Oregon boaters make the trip to run the box on the Sacramento river. The flows were pretty low so we only ran part of the run.

Kern River Festival April 16-17

The snowpack is looking promising for an epic Brush Creek Race as well as other goods like Upper Brush, Tule and, as always, all sorts of stuff on the Kaweah.  Also, as an added bonus, I am 90% sure the Cataracts will be running this year!  If you have not done this stretch, it is Cherry Creek on roids.   We are also working on booking Frandy Park so that everyone can camp there for a nominal fee (something like $10 for the weekend) as well as a grass-roots paddling film festival of some sort. …See More

California Race Series: CaliBurnFest 2010

It would be difficult to find a series of kayak races and festivals better then those in California over late August through early October. Four festivals over a month and a half. Four races down some of the classic class IV and V runs in California. In many ways, the atmosphere is reminiscent of the large kayak festivals of the 90's. Only this time the races provide non-paddlers with legitimate entertainment as racers charge down rapids, ooohhs and aaahhhs at good lines and of course the all… Continue

POE Flow Forecast this weekend.

I'm acting as proxy for the source, who prefers to remain unknown. Here is a one week forecast, with the usual stipulation that it could be 100% wrong depending on any number of circumstances.

"Flows will be lower this weekend than they have been the past few days. Expect 525-550 Saturday dropping to 500 Sunday and then down through the middle of next week. Barring a precepitation event, they should return to the 600 range late next week. The repairs should be complete in mid… Continue

Fantasy Falls

Fantasy Falls has always been one of my favorite overnight Sierra runs. When caught at the right flow the run has endless interesting rapids, packing 2-3 days of non-stop awesome whitewater. This year California brought some crazy weather, so as the temps dropped out and storms scoured the high Sierra Nevada's with snow and rain, I was worried that I would miss it. At the last minute, Thomas Moore and Taylor Cavin called up fired up to get on this run, and while we thought the flows could be… Continue

Yuba Gap

I guess the 6th time is the charm...After being shut down for years trying to do this fickle run, word of a reliable flow release filtered down through the boating community. Still skeptical, I decided to drive up to put-in off of Bowman road which is a few miles below the well-known Spaulding reservoir (Fordyce take-out). I met up with Thomas Moore, Scott Lindgren, Little Dave, and Lane Jacobs and we were all stoked to see a perfect flow in the canyon. Scott had done the run once a year ago… Continue
